Dlatego rybactwo i wędkarstwo mają istotne znaczenie dla lokalnej społeczności, od założenia miasta Augustowa, aż do czasów współczesnych.
Pojezierze Augustowskie wyróżnia się bogactwem ryb. Szacuje się, że żyje ich tu ponad 30 gatunków. Połowem trudnią się zawodowi rybacy, ale także liczni wędkarze, z pasją korzystający z dobrodziejstw naszych akwenów. Jeziora, rzeki i stawy pełne ryb, czysta woda, świeże powietrze, spokój oraz rozwinięta infrastruktura wędkarska i turystyczna stanowią niepodważalne atuty, które przyciągają amatorów tej formy spędzania wolnego czasu. Dostrzegając ten potencjał oraz nawiązując do bogatej historii rybackiej regionu, Powiat Augustowski realizuje projekt „Promocja dziedzictwa rybackiego Ziemi Augustowskiej”, współfinansowany przez Unię Europejską ze środków Europejskiego Funduszu Morskiego i Rybackiego w ramach Programu Operacyjnego „Rybactwo i Morze” na lata 2014-2020. Zgodnie z zapisami umowy o dofinansowanie, całkowita wartość operacji wynosi 49.511,75 zł, w tym 74%, tj. 36.638 zł będzie pochodziło ze środków zewnętrznych, natomiast pozostała kwota wydatków w wysokości 12.873,75 zł opłacona zostanie z budżetu Powiatu Augustowskiego. Celem projektu jest promocja Ziemi Augustowskiej, jako obszaru zależnego od rybactwa.
W ramach przedsięwzięcia opracowany i wydany został album prezentujący szlaki turystyczne Ziemi Augustowskiej – papieskie, kajakowe, żeglarskie, piesze, rowerowe i konne. Na wszystkich szlakach są widoczne elementy dziedzictwa kulturowego rybołówstwa. Prezentowane w albumie trasy przebiegają przez tereny leśne i przyrodniczo cenne obszary, obok gospodarstw rybackich, łowisk wędkarskich oraz punktów gastronomicznych, oferujących wyśmienite, świeże i zdrowe dania z lokalnych ryb. Ponadto w ramach projektu opracowana została ulotka w formie przewodnika questowego, umożliwiającego odkrywanie ciekawych miejsc i związanych z nimi historii oraz rozwiązywanie zagadek w formie gry terenowej. Celem opracowanego przewodnika questowego ma być poznanie szlaków turystycznych Ziemi Augustowskiej przez mieszkańców i turystów, podążających trasą wędrówki wiodącą przez zakątki, mające ścisły związek z rybactwem. W każdym z takich miejsc rozwiązywana będzie zagadka zamieszczona w przewodniku questowym. Osoby, które rozwiążą wszystkie zadania, będą mogły zgłosić się do Starostwa Powiatowego w Augustowie przy ul. 3 Maja 29 i otrzymać bezpłatnie w nagrodę album pt. „Szlaki turystyczne Ziemi Augustowskiej pod znakiem ryby”.
W celu wypromowania Ziemi Augustowskiej jako obszaru zależnego od rybactwa, w ramach projektu zaplanowano także zorganizowanie zawodów wędkarskich oraz dwóch spotkań promocyjnych – w Augustowie i w Warszawie.
